Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does —or does not— say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

My Thoughts

I would like to thank the Publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

This book….THIS BOOK!! I can hardly put into words how important it is for you to read this book!

The Hate U Give is a fictional book that is centred around the Black Lives Matter campaign. Angie writes in such a unique and beautiful way. She takes such an important message and creates a meaningful story. I laugh and cried my way through this amazing novel.

The cover of this book fits perfectly with everything it has to say plus the title spells out THUG and that just made me love Angie even more.

While reading THUG I realised how much I was like Starr and how I could relate so much to her. This inspired me beyond words because I rarely find a book that I can relate to on such a deep level.

THUG fits in with everything that’s going on in the world, It teaches you not to give up and speak out because everybody has a voice and all of our voices are valid no matter what the colour of our skin or what religion we come from. We don’t have to use violence to get our point across as we all have a voice!

This is a vital read, it is heartbreakingly honest and powerful book that will educate you in the best possible way!
